Mounting Artificial Plants and Flowers into Planters

Use expanding spray foam as a base for a long-lasting, realistic floral display. Follow these steps:
-
Prep the Area
Lay down a drop cloth to protect your workspace and put on gloves. Place your empty window box on a flat surface. -
Spray the Foam
Shake your can of expanding spray foam thoroughly. Fill the box about halfway to allow for expansion. -
Let the Foam Expand and Dry
Allow the foam to fully expand and cure until it reaches the desired level. This typically takes 8–12 hours depending on conditions. -
Apply Glue and Add Top Layer
Brush a thin layer of wood glue over the hardened foam. While it's still wet, sprinkle Spanish moss, potting soil, or worm castings on top for a realistic finish. Let this dry completely. -
Insert and Secure the Plants
Use a drill or skewer to make small holes where you want your flowers. Add a drop of glue to each stem and insert them into the holes, pressing firmly to secure.
Tips for Best Results
- Use UV-resistant artificial plants if the box will be in direct sunlight.
- Vary the stem lengths for a natural, layered look.
- Position taller plants in the back and trailing ones near the front edge.
- Leave space for seasonal swaps or decorative accents.
